“When I’m not around / and you’re feeling down / let the sight of me bring ease to your smile” What we’re listening to this week…
With so much death and tragedy in the world, it can be hard to see the light in the midst of all the darkness. And although it definitely feels like Winter is Coming, right now Summer is Here. Everything about Sun Joint, the latest album from the NYC-based duo Lion Babe, from the sunny cover art to the lead single Endless Summer is just what you need to bring the positive summer vibes back. Singer Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman showcase an impressive range of musical and vocal styles on this album, so it works well on a road trip, beach day, or barbecue.
In this moment, it is critically important to engage in relentless self-care. Remember to take time every day to laugh, breathe, sing, cry, love…and dance. This week we’ve got Take Over by U.K. duo Kwamz & Flava turned all the way up. This song’s part-dancehall, part-afrobeat sound is the perfect anthem for all your pre-party shenangians. And if you need a little more, the fan dance compilation video they put together for the song is one of the best things we’ve seen all summer.
“I got a car full a girls and it’s going real slow / and pon de beach everybody wan go”
We keep the irie vibes coming and the waists whining with Summer 16 by Jamaican dancehall legend Vybz Kartel. Here’s to cars filled with good times and good (looking) people!
“Is it your hips that remind me of the hills? / is it your eyes that remind of the hills? / Is it your lips that feel like the clouds much feel? / And when I get you, it feels just how Malibu feels”
We finish up this week with Malibu Feels (j.robb remix), a smooth, car-speaker friendly edit from Baltimore producer j.robb. This remix is perfect for hitting the Ave with the windows down and your summer sixteen bae on the passenger’s side. Check out the laid-back sound on the original single from singer/producer Johnny Yukon.
